Cleaning Business Insurance for Accidental Damage, Theft and Lost Keys

·12 min read

Three insurance worries keep cleaners up at night: what happens if you knock over a vase, what if those house keys go missing, and what can you do if a client accuses your team of stealing? These aren’t hypotheticals for cleaning businesses — they’re real scenarios that can threaten your reputation and your bank account.

While each claim is assessed on its individual facts, insurance can respond in three typical ways.

Accidental damage to a client’s property typically falls under public liability or property damage cover. If you or your employee accidentally breaks something belonging to a client — a lamp, a window, electronics — the insurer may cover the cost of repair or replacement, up to the limit of your policy. Some policies exclude damage caused by normal wear and tear or deterioration, so it’s important to check the wording.

Lost or stolen keys may be covered under a money and keys extension or as part of a broader liability section. The cover can extend to the cost of replacing locks and keys if they’re lost or stolen while in your care. Again, specific conditions apply — for example, some policies only respond if the loss is reported to the police within a set timeframe.

Employee theft accusations are more complicated. A client alleging theft does not automatically trigger a payout, but general property or fidelity cover can sometimes respond where an employee has actually stolen client property. Many policies require a criminal conviction before a claim is paid, and cover is usually subject to strict sub-limits. The key distinction is that insurance generally covers proven theft by employees, not unfounded allegations.

None of these covers operates as a blanket guarantee. Exclusions, excesses and sub-limits vary widely between policies and insurers. A policy that’s right for one cleaning business may not suit another.
